St. Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer, born José María Mariano Escrivá y Albás on January 9, 1902, in Barbastro, Spain, was the second of six children in a devout Catholic family. His parents, José Escrivá y Corzán and María de los Dolores Albás y Blanc, instilled in him a deep respect for faith from an early age. The religious atmosphere of his hometown significantly influenced his spiritual development, guiding him towards a life dedicated to God and the Church.

Josemaría's journey toward the priesthood began with his seminary studies in Logroño, followed by training at the University of Zaragoza, where he also pursued civil law, obtaining a licentiate degree in 1927. He was ordained a priest on March 28, 1925, in Zaragoza, where his commitment to his faith and dedication to studying the Church's teachings became evident. The call to establish something profound surfaced in his heart during a spiritual retreat in 1928, leading him to found Opus Dei on October 2 of that year in Madrid. This institution was grounded in the belief that all people are called to holiness, regardless of their state in life.

The onset of the Spanish Civil War in 1936 marked a challenging period for Josemaría. He faced significant anti-clerical violence, which forced him to flee Madrid for Burgos and then Rome. These experiences deepened his resolve and commitment to his mission, as he sought to provide spiritual guidance amid the turmoil. His relocation to Rome in 1946 was not only a sanctuary but also a strategy to further Opus Dei's international presence. The organization grew rapidly, receiving pontifical approval from Pope Pius XII in 1950, cementing its role within the Catholic Church.

Throughout his life, Josemaría was known for his vibrant character, embodying humility, charity, and a joyful spirit. His dedication was palpable, inspiring those around him to sanctify their daily tasks and live out their faith vocally and visibly. He led a prayerful life, often depicted in priestly attire with a rosary or a book, symbols of his deep spiritual devotion and theological wisdom. Despite his robust spirit, he faced personal trials, including health issues such as type 1 diabetes and epilepsy.

Josemaría Escrivá's health declined in his later years, yet he remained diligent in his mission until his death on June 26, 1975, in Rome, Italy. His legacy is profound, reflected in the continued growth of Opus Dei and the establishment of significant pilgrimage sites, most notably the Sanctuary of Torreciudad in Spain, inaugurated shortly after his passing. His feast day, celebrated on the anniversary of his death, is a time for devotees to reflect on his teachings and their importance in cultivating a life of holiness.

Posthumously, Josemaría's influence endures, demonstrated by the widespread devotion fostered through novenas and various initiatives, particularly by the St. Josemaria Institute. Beatified by Pope John Paul II on May 17, 1992, and canonized on October 6, 2002, his teachings continue to resonate with those seeking to integrate faith into their everyday lives, affirming his role as the patron of Opus Dei and all who strive to sanctify their daily work.
