Thomas Choe Yang-eop

Thomas Choe Yang-eop was born on December 18, 1821, in Hanyang, Korea, to a family of Confucian scholars. Despite his family’s traditional beliefs, Thomas was drawn to Christianity at a young age, influenced by the teachings of the Catholic missionaries in his region. Following an initial encounter with the faith, he was baptized in 1839, taking the name Thomas, which signifies his deep quest for truth and faith.

After his conversion, he dedicated himself to learning more about the Catholic faith and working to bring Christianity to his fellow Koreans. His commitment led him to the seminary in Macau, where he studied under the guidance of the French priests. He was ordained a priest on June 16, 1845, and he returned to Korea, where he faced the stark reality of religious persecution.

As the church in Korea went through periods of intense trials, Thomas was undeterred. He found innovative ways to minister to his flock while navigating the complexities of a society deeply rooted in Confucian ideals and skeptical of foreign religions. He often traveled to remote villages to meet with parishioners, reassuring them in their faith and providing the sacraments amid their struggles. Throughout his ministry, he emphasized pastoral care, focusing on forming strong communities centered on Christ.

In 1866, a period of severe persecution erupted in Korea, largely influenced by the government's hostility toward Christianity. Thomas, refusing to abandon his parishioners, continued his work. He was arrested along with many fellow Christians, accused of undermining the state and promoting foreign influence. Despite the fear and uncertainty, he remained steadfast in his faith even during his imprisonment, encouraging others to hold strong to their beliefs.

Thomas was martyred on June 15, 1866, demonstrating tremendous courage and unwavering faith in the face of death. His final moments were characterized by prayers for his persecutors and a deep sense of peace that came from his profound relationship with God.

Following his death, Thomas Choe Yang-eop’s legacy grew in the hearts of the faithful. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on May 6, 1984, as part of a group of Korean martyrs. His feast day is celebrated on June 15, a testament to his courage and devotion as a priest who laid down his life for the love of Christ and the salvation of souls. His life continues to inspire countless Christians in Korea and around the world, serving as a powerful example of faith, hope, and love even in the most challenging circumstances.
