May

May is Mary's month. Eastertide runs through most of it — toward the Ascension and Pentecost — while the whole month is given to Our Lady, closing on her Visitation.

What to know first

May’s great days are Ascension of the Lord (May 6), Pentecost Sunday (May 16), and Most Holy Trinity (May 23).

For your family

Keeping May at home

May crowning is the heart of the month — children gather flowers and a wreath is laid on an image of Our Lady. Many families keep a small May altar and add a Hail Mary, or a daily decade of the Rosary, all month long.

Eastertide reaches its close with the Ascension and Pentecost, the coming of the Holy Spirit. The Easter candle is extinguished, and the long green of Ordinary Time begins again.
